I was tagged twice last night. I am responding but I am also proclaiming my blogger tag immunity status. I had no idea what to post about myself that you guys don't already know about my so I asked my husband to help me out on this one. His responses are bold and my commentary follows.
Tell 'em that you're gray. Gray, not gay, people. And not that there is anything wrong with being gray or gay. Yes, I am about sixty percent gray. I have been having my hair colored every four weeks for almost twenty years now.
Tell 'em that you like antiques. Ah, good call David. Yes, I love antiques especially when they have a history back to our families. When our house gets back together from our oh-my-gosh-what-were-we-thinking-when-we-started-this-project I will show you some of my favorites. I do have a love for old books. I love the way they smell and the way the feel.
Do they know you are going to be the mother of the groom? My oldest son is getting married in June. That means I have about ten months to lose weight, find a beige dress, and learn how to keep my mouth shut. Wish me luck with that one!
Do they know that you like pictures of leaves and fruit and stuff? I think what David is trying to say is that I decorate with botanicals. Photographs, vintage prints, simple floral arrangements.
That the only reason you are a cat person and not a dog person is because you don't like to pick up dog poop. True enough, my dear.
This is the first time in fifteen years that I haven't had a houseful of dogs. I originally had a kennel where I bred and showed shih tzu and yorkies. I sold that when we moved to this house three years ago.
When we got to this place we had four great danes, all of them from rescue and one more fabulous then the next. I also was active in greyhound rescue at the same time I had the danes so we usually had about four greyhounds in addition to the danes.
Big Boy, Brindle Greyhound. Came to me with a broken leg, nursed him back to health and got him ready for adoption. He always liked to sleep with a blanket over his head. He was by far the tallest greyhound I ever had the pleasure to live with, yet he looked dwarfed by the danes.
Another picture of Big Boy with his favorite doo rag.
Scuba Doo had a sad story. Things like this are so out of the normal, the majority of the greyhound tracks are good facilities but that doesn't mean you can't end up with a unscrupulous kennel manager.
Scuba's kennel manager took the money and ran. Stole the valuable equipment, cashed the checks and left the dogs to live in eleven dogs to live in their own filth until someone discovered them days and days after he ran off. My Scuba was one of the few to survive. He was stained and burnt from sitting in his own urine, he was shy, timid and had to relearn that food wasn't going to go away again.
Scuba lived with as about four months until he was ready to become someones beloved pet forever. He left here with about as much confidence as any other greyhound, but always remained skittish in new situations.
Now this is Arianna trying to watch television with Cole, a mottled blue merle great dane laying in her lap. Cole did not know any boundaries.
When we got Cole he was about one hundred and seventy pounds and could hardly walk. Long story short, it was a thyroid problem and once he had his situation remedied and maintained he was a very proud svelte one hundred and thirty five pounds of love.
Cole eventually was put down because he had later developed a neurological disease that would continue to progress. We tried to keep him going as long as he could, but once he started to shuffle his feet and fell down a flight of steps, well our choice was an obvious one.
This is Bree, a very poorly bred harlequin dane. She was an absolute hoot and a genuine bitch. She was about ten years old when we had her put down. She had a horrific swayback from delivering too many puppies in a puppy mill situation and the pain from her arthritis couldn't be managed anymore. She was miserable and it was her time.
The funniest thing about Bree was when she was happy her tail didn't wag from side to side like a "regular" dog, instead it went around and around in a giant circle.
And this is William, trying to budge Travis out of his queen size bed. William, like all my other danes, came to me through rescue. He was a magnificent tall male, he was 36 inches at the shoulder and when I put my arm straight out his ear pricks touched my underneath my outstretched arm. Oh and he loved me. So much. He was well bred and a dane owners dream come true. I believe he weighed about one hundred and eighty pounds. He, too, thought he was a lap dog.
And then one day William started to cough up blood and was always tired and very wobbly. It wasn't hard to deal with because we always took in the rescues that didn't have a lot of time left but we wanted to give them the best possible out of their remaining years. Turns out my dear William was heart worm positive. Damn. So we dumped a couple thousand bucks in to him for the treatment (you know the bigger the dog, the bigger the bill) and had him on crate rest for eight weeks.
As William recovered his true personality began to shine through and he was an absolute mean, mean dog. He was territorial and wouldn't let any humans near me, not even the kids. Then he snapped at David and you could actually hear his jaws smack together and all David was going to do was lean over William and give me a hug when he got home from work.
Well, the decision got made that this dog had to go and it killed me. My vet reassured me he couldn't be rehomed because there wasn't a place in the world that would have been able to tolerate a situation such as that. My vet even tried to rehome him for me and it just wasn't possible. This was an eight year old giant dog that was ready to bite. Danes live to be eight to ten.
Now let me stress that William's case was highly unusual. Danes are fabulous dogs, William was not the norm. My kids used the danes as pillows to watch television.
That you don't like to do housecleaning. That wasn't fair David and now you have to come up with three more things as a penalty for that one thing.
That you like dirt track races. On our first date David took me to a dirt track race and I was hooked immediately. I am not really a fan of the dust and I have no desire to get up close and get that dirty but I love it. And I am a screamer. I yell at the cars and the drivers and at other fans that are three sections away from ours. I usually yell until I have no voice.
My favorite car to watch would be the late models, when they come on the track and you can feel the motors of the vehicle rumbling in from the top of your collar bone all the way to the bottom of your ribcage? Well, it is fabulous.
My second favorite? I like the grand nationals. I could really care less about the sprint cars, too many flips and restarts, more cautions than I have patience for on any given night. Now I know these car names change for what ever area you live in, even different tracks in Wisconsin call these vehicles different names but those are the names they use at the track we go to in Plymouth Wisconsin which is a one third mile track.
Tell them the name of that book you are reading. I am almost done with Wicked, The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West by Gregory Maguire. When that is done I will be reading Son Of A Witch by the same author.
Do they know you have seven cats? I think I may have mentioned that, honey.

Very informative!
I LOVE the dog pics. Cole in the lap is fantastic!!
Hallie :)
Love the post! :) Do you have any current dogs now?
Great post, as always! Tell me though, do you like the book "Wicked"? Because we read it for book club last year, and I didn't really get into it.
That is awesome that you were involved in greyhound rescue! We wanted to, but we have too many stairs in the house and our yard isn't fenced all the way in or big enough.
Very interesting post. I think I know you even better now.
You're the best Carrie! I love that fostered greyhounds--we adopted 2 ex-racers and they were the best pets. As you know, I have Italian greyhounds now--b/c the smaller size was better when I was in an apt. and I stuck w/ them. I would love to get another greyhound someday though!
Thanks for sharing the fun info. about you and the great dog pics!
Oh! What do you think of those books?
My mom has 7 seven cats. Makes for interesting entertainment at times. I used to have 17 goats...then they had little goats and 17 became 52. That made for interesting times, too.
I read Wicked and it was a brutal struggle for me, what with all the politics in Oz. I actually had to challenge myself to get through it.
I also read Mirror Mirror... Another book filled with politics and odd characters that I had a tough time visualizing.
I'll be interested to hear a review from you on Wicked.
I love dogs so much so...I don't mind picking up dog poop. My grandson follows me around with his little arm shoved up a blue bag saying he wants to pick up thet next poop Gigi! He told his Dad when he was asked "What did you do with GiGi today?" "We picked up poop all day!"
Your dogs were beautiful and such a kind thing you did!
congratulations on your impending monther-in-law-hood
your dog stories made me miss my Rufus [sniffle, sob]
I really enjoyed Wicked, but I have yet to read Son of a Witch.
I love your poochy pictures. I have never owned either one of those breeds. I would love a great dane! I had a st. bernard that was a hoot. Too big, but a hoot.
I love great Danes, too bad William turned out to be such a booger.
YOu have seven cats? :)
Love the dog photos.
Oh, I love a wedding.
Kitties rock.
I think I will hook onto your tagging immunity.
I love the puppy pics! I'd love to have a great dane, but my friends that have had them have not had good health experiances.
And, that's AWESOME that you love dirt track racing! I work at our local track each week, and we have a HUGE late model show in October that I can't wait for. My best friend and her husband own it, so I've learned a LOT about the inner workings. Fun stuff, but I'm with you . . . not wild about washing my "tan" off when I get home at night!
If I brought home even one cat, my wife would poop a brick.
Neat to hear about your rescue stories. Our scottish terrier is a semi-rescue. She's getting better with time and has turned out to be a real sweetie.

Wow, I had no idea that you fostered dogs...what a wonderful person to be able to do that...
"Wicked" is one of my all time favorite books...I think I've read it at least 4 times. I introduced it to my book club and it disbanded shortly thereafter...coincidence?! I also read "Son of a Witch" it was also a good read but not as good as "Wicked"
Thanks for your comments yesterday...I am sure I will be calling on you in the future for advice...
OK so do you not like the soon to be daughter-in-law????
Also we read Wicked a few years ago in book club and once I got used to the crazy words I loved it. I tired to read Son of a Witch when it came out and I still haven't finished that one. :)
See...I knew I loved you....a fellow animal lover.
Man, I got tagged twice yesterday too....I like this 'tag immunity' thing...I think I will have to impose it too after I make my list....
Love all the pics...I think foster parents of animals and humans are amazing....
Holy SMOKES BATGIRL! I suppose a full house is better than a quiet one :)
Excellent post! I have a feeling that if I got involved in Greyhound Rescue I wouldn't be able to stop. They are so cute and need so much love.
I think the tail wagging thing is like a left handed person vs. right handed person thing. We had a friend whose lab did that too.
Hmmm...a MOG that has to keep her mouth shut...thinking that's not so much going to happen. Are you going to dish the dirt?
I LOVED Wicked!!!!!
And I love that you rescued dogs. That's my dream. However, I don't have the funds. I have the space, but not the funds.
Immunity shmooonity! We give you nothing of the sort! LOL.
well, you can't have a dirty kitchen floor with all those dogs... I would get a dog but it would end up slobbering me to death with all the food I wear!
Ya.. thanks for playing along,, I am sure this silly tag thing you are doing will only last a little while.. : waaahahahahaa
I didn't know you were a rescuer, too (or if I did, I forgot). The dog part of your post made me smile & tear up. I've had to give up a beloved dog for becoming aggressive, too. Tore my heart out.
Thanks for sharing all that stuff!
We are the Rescue Kitty Home. Five at the moment. I'm tempted on a daily basis to draw chalk lines around each and every prostate (not the boy stuff, that's prostRate)(crap, I think I got it backwards) bodies and do a Who-Dun-It post about the bodies strewn about the floor...
The pugs don't count. They were not rescued, they just showed up.
Wow. I really got lost in this post (in a good way!) I love that Hubby helped you. Thanks for sharing.
I have *always* wanted a Great Dane... still working on Boyfriend, who thinks they're a bit big. The pic of Cole on the couch is fantastic... my cat has no boundaries too. When he was a baby he used to sleep with his head on my pillow. In the winter, he sleeps under the covers with us! He also greets me at the door when I come home.
Animals really do add so much to our lives.
I love Danes. They are truly gentle giants.
Sandi
Your dogs pictures are wonderful! Just beautiful. Kudos to you for rescuing and foster parenting great danes and greyhounds. The bigger the better : )
* I'm having a CONTEST! Have you entered yet? *
Did you know I have 7 cats? We should share names. I love to hear names for people's pets. Oh, and your immunity status? You do realize you will now get tagged at an alarming rate.
And this is what I get for checking my reader out of order. Please ignore the tag on my last comment from the above entry. :-)
This was very enjoyable reading! I especially loved the dogs. I'm a huge fan of big dogs. Love Danes! You had some real beauties.
Oh, I love all the dog pics. My hubby has promised that I can get a Dane, so I've been looking around but don't want to get just any one, you know? His cousin used to breed them and their dogs were just amazing (they also used to breed Chihuahuas, it was a riot seeing them all together!)
Thanks for sharing so much more about you!
I like the Hornets - you know the little beat up hondas and such that make such a racket?? Those are my favorites....
WE used to go to the tracks in Fountain City, WI (tri-oval) and in Arcadia, WI.
Your like Barbie...you have everything...a great sense of humor, loving and caring pet rescuer, almost MIL (lucky gal to get you) and a talent for writing. I bow to you!
Great Pooch photos! Love your stories. You really LOVE your pets! That's so awesome!
Well now I need to see a picture of you! Gray or not!
I like your tagging immunity too? How about one for awards? It's harder to be gracious and humble when saying...I don't do awards, eh?
Found your through the moms ad exchange widget!
That dog is gorgeous!!!
