Untraditional Traditions, The One We Never Repeated

For at least the last twenty years, Santa comes to our house on Christmas Eve morning. That's correct, December 24 ... crack of dawn.

It was a tradition that started out of necessity and just continued because of the convenience. And much like Ronda, we told our children that Santa always delivered to his favorites first.

One particularly hectic Christmas, I was behind schedule. Alright, to say I was further behind schedule than usual would be a more accurate statement.

By 2:15 a.m. on December 24th:

* I had wrapped the last present

* I took a Santa-sized bite out of a frosted cookie

* Drank an appropriate amount of Santa's lukewarm eggnog

* Presents semi-neatly arranged under the tree (it had to look like Santa rushed and not lingered)

* Tree lights turned on
At this point I could have crawled into bed.

At this point I should have crawled into bed.

But I didn't.

Instead, my sleep-deprived, pre-menstrual inner child decided it would be fun to run through the house screaming, "He's been here, he's been here! Santa was here."

In My Mind:
Why should I lay down for about three hours and have a posse of kids wake me up? Wouldn't it be fun to turn the tables and wake them up when they least expect it? Let them see what it feels like to be jolted from slumber by someone screaming about Santa?

In The Real World:
I did run through the upstairs screaming, "He was here, Santa was here!" I had teens staring at my like I lost my mind. I had pre-teens squinting. I had a really confused husband. Very slowly, one by one they trickled to the first floor. Very slowly they curled up under blankets on the couches. Without much enthusiasm they opened gifts. They remained dazed and confused until they became crabby and intolerable. They went from sleepy, heavy lidded children to holy terrors on this Holiest of all Holy Days.

The rest of that day was a blur for me. What seemed like a brilliant idea was more of a brain fart than anything else. I, too, remained dazed and confused until I became crabby and intolerable.

I think the best part about that particular Untraditional Tradition is the ammunition my two oldest children will have for the rest of their lives. Every Christmas since it has been brought up at my expense. Sure, the story has been embellished to the point that it is difficult to uncover the reality that lies within and I have no idea how they became such proficient storytellers.

Do you have an untraditional tradition you would like to share? I am having an easy to enter give away. Click here for more information!

Carrie, That is the funniest holiday I've heard in a while. I LOVE IT! I have some funny stories in our family that have been embellished beyond recognition but they aren't centered around holiday traditions. I really needed this chuckle today more than you know.

That story was funny! Mom and Dad used to let us girls open up one present a few days before christmas. and every year it was pajamas....we had to look cute for the christmas morning picture!!

Cracks me up! That is too funny! We too have Santa visit on Christmas Eve morning - ours due to the strange schedules with being kids of divorce. But what is sad - with the two older ones - what you describe is our experience every year, and they aren't even being awakened until 8:30 or 9! They open gifts and then quickly retreat back to bed taking only the items they want - leaving the rest! I have put in for them to join us for brunch this year - leave the Santa for the younger two - the older ones can get their stockings and goodies when fully awake!

If I was even a little bit of a morning person, I would soooo do this. But I love it when the kids sleep in..even on Christmas.

You are nuts women! You woke your kids up at 2 in the morning on purpose!!! I would take the 3 hours of sleep over that any day! :))

By the way does fighting with your mom every Christmas count as a Tradition? :))

That's hillarious! We were allowed to open one present when we returned from midnight mass on Christmas eve, then the rest in the morning.

The newest tradition we have with our enormous extended family (of 24ish) is a white elephant gift/game where we get to release our inner child and give the funniest things we can think of. Plus, its a fun game to play.

My daughter has already threatened to squash her brother if he even pretends like he is going to wake her up before, like, 11:00. THAT'S cranky!

My parents would not let us get up "until it is light outside." I remember waiting at the window to see light.

I don't have anything that even compares to that!!!

I have to admit that I'm still the kid in our house when it comes to Christmas morning. I'm the one up making noise and trying to get everyone else out of bed. At, like, 5:00 in the morning. lol!

You can count me as a "little" kid too. I think I get more enjoyment out of Christmas than they do..

I admit, it sounded like a brilliant idea to when I read "Why not just stay up". Then when you wrote about the kids being dazed, confused then crabby and intolerable. I realized that my 3 am bed time, then up again at 6 will be just fine this year.

That is too funny....

We have celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve forever....my Dad'd family gets together on Christmas Day so we have to make a 2 hour drive that morning....its all good though.

It is more fun for me now that I have Zander though.....he doesn't wake me up yet because he doesn't understand the concept....yet...
